Michele Zalopany
September 2004 Relating to the works of Michelle Zalopany
Zalopany's work is informed by photographs found in magazines, books on home interiors, travel guides and photographic archives. The images must appeal on a compositional, aesthetic and psychological level. She then enlarges the images freehand, giving them a deliberate 'handmade' look. This also gives the artist the opportunity to distort and alter the image to her own criteria. Sometimes, if the source image is in colour, Zalopany will transform it into monochromatic tones.
Educated at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1976-78) and the School of Visual Arts, New York (B.F.A, 1981), the artist has exhibited at the 1989 Whitney Biennial. She lives and works in New York.
